How Long Does it Take to Learn to Speak Arabic with Confidence?
When you are considering taking a language course, one of the questions you may have is, “How long will it take before I see results?” You want to know whether the investment of your time, effort and money will be worthwhile. In the case of taking one of the courses at London Arabic Tuition, it will take about six months or 40-50 hours of study reach a level where you will learn to speak Arabic with confidence.
What Does it Mean to Speak Arabic with Confidence?
When I talk about being able to speak Arabic with confidence, what I am describing is to converse at an intermediate or an upper intermediate level.
Most students can achieve this level during the time listed above. Some of our students are able to become even more fluent in Arabic during the same six-month period of study.
What separates one student from another when they are learning to speak Arabic? Is it some type of gift for learning languages that some people have, but others have not been blessed with? Absolutely not.
How to Increase your Confidence when Learning a New Language
If you have ever taken lessons in a second language at school, how did you feel when you first started learning? Were you shy about using the words? You probably were.
Did it help you to mimic the way your teacher pronounced them? Sometimes you had to have a complicated word broken down into syllables so that you could learn the correct pronunciation, I’ll bet.
You started off with simple words and phrases and then learned how to have a conversation. One thing that people who are learning a new language tend to do is think about what they want to say in their native language and then “translate” it in their head before speaking. This is one reason why they are slow to speak when they are just learning.
If you were speaking to someone in English but weren’t sure of the right word to use, you would substitute a similar one in the conversation. The other person you were talking to would fill in the blank or ask a question if they didn’t understand what you meant. Between the two of you, you would be able to figure it out.
Conversation doesn’t have to be precise. Once you get to the point where you are thinking in your “new” language without attempting to translate what you want to say first, you will have more confidence in what you are trying to say.
Get past the point of being afraid to make a mistake when speaking. Even native speakers of a particular language don’t necessarily speak perfectly at all times. Once you stop thinking about your own words and focusing on communicating with the other person (or people) you are trying to have a conversation with, your level of confidence with your new language will soar!
How do you get to this point? Here’s a plan that we suggest to our students who wish to learn to speak Arabic with confidence. We know it works for them. It can work for you as well, as long as you are prepared to put the necessary effort into it.
Ideal Plan for Learning to Speak Arabic Confidently
Ideally, you would sign up for one to one classes with an instructor. Lessons last from 1.5-2 hours each and give you the best opportunity to practice your language skills. You receive individual attention and can learn to speak Arabic at your own pace.
Our courses are developed for each individual student. You can get the type of learning that you need, not some type general program that was written to cover basic knowledge of how to speak Arabic. Tell us what your goals are and we will help you accomplish them.
Are you planning to visit an Arab-speaking country to go on holiday? Do you have Arab-speaking friends or relatives whom you would like to communicate with in their native language? Would knowing how to speak Arabic help you in your professional life? Let us know and we can tailor your course material to suit your needs.
If your schedule permits, you can schedule an additional class per week. Taking this step will accelerate your learning and help you to develop your spoken Arabic language skills more quickly. At London Arabic Tuition, we focus on teaching our students a dialect first, as opposed to focusing on MSA (Modern Standard Arabic).
Along with attending one-on-on classes regularly, you will need to commit to working on your language skills at home for an additional two or three hours per week.
Commit to this level of study for about six months, and you will get to the point where you will be able to practice with Arab-speaking friends to continue improving your language skills.
